Banning VPNs will Turn Netflixers into Pirates!
Earlier this month, Netflix announced that it’s being made available in almost everywhere in the world (except for some regions like China). It was really great news. However, the excitement and happiness among the movie buffs and internet users around the world, seems to be short lived.
As Netflix opens its doors to the world, the debate about the online streaming giant’s recent announcement, to slap VPN service providers with an ultimate ban, has heated up. What Netflix is up to then? And behold! Netflix has already started a crackdown on more than million of internet users who access Netflix through a VPN.
Big Question: Why Use a VPN to access Netflix when it is available all over the world?
The titles available on Netflix library are subject to content licensing. Therefore, only those titles, deemed suitable for each region are made available online, keeping in view the diversified background and cultural sensitivities of the audience at large.
Here, I am going to present you a scenario. What if you are in a region, where that particular title isn’t available but you still want to watch it? Well, that’s where VPNs come as a savior in the shining armor.
Through a VPN, a user can change his/her virtual location and appear from any region of one’s own choice. Therefore, even when Netflix is available all around the world, the complete library isn’t available for everyone; and most of the internet users tend to connect with US-UK servers to watch Netflix from there, hence accessing more titles and bypassing geographical restrictions.
As the situation stands today, the users, who bought Netflix subscriptions with sheer happiness, have started unsubscribing it with utter disappointment. The signs of displeasure have started to come out earlier than expected. It’s all the backlash of banning VPNs. A situation that Netflix hadn’t had anticipated.
It’s a fact that US and UK libraries of Netflix have the most titles, and that’s what compelled the internet users previously to access Netflix through these regions using a VPN. But as Netflix has imposed a ban on VPNs, subscribers outside of these regions are left with content which might not appeal to them. It’s because of this simple reason that Netflix might experience a drastic decrease in its subscriber base.
Now, most of the internet users who are trying to access Netflix through a VPN are getting this error message.
Services to the Rescue:
After the crackdown begun, many online services emerged, assisting the internet users in finding the number of Netflix titles available in various regions. According to Finder.com, The US Netflix Library currently has the most comprehensive collection of Netflix titles with more than 4579 movie and 1081 TV shows available.
If you specifically want to search for a title on Netflix, and want to know in how many regions it is available, you can simply search for it on uNoGS.
Subscriptions Suspended and Piracy Expected:
We carefully monitored the official ‘Netflix‘ sub-Reddit to gauge the responses of Netflix lovers. We observed that most of the internet users who subscribed to Netflix and were enjoying their favorite content on Netflix legally and in peace, started unsubscribing from the streaming service and also dropped their VPN subscriptions too, because a lot of the VPN service providers were making bounties while bypassing Netflix geo-restrictions, and after Netflix was made available everywhere, VPNs jumped into cashing on, sensing that the users might want to use a VPN for accessing region-specific content.
Alas! To their utter disappointment, the happiness quickly faded away when a Netflix user had to face the reality that it’s no more possible to access region-specific content on the leading online streaming service.
Now, we are afraid to predict that piracy of Netflix content would be the next phase. These restrictions have already sparked a rebellious attitude amongst the internet users around the world. In order to watch their favorite movie and TV shows, they will definitely pivot towards their only savior on the web: Torrents – the illegal ones!
