Netflix vs Kodi – Who’s winning the battle?
It’s a wonder how a company started off as a DVD-by-mail service and now its very name has become a “verb”. Yes you got that right’ it’s the one and only Netflix. In the year 2000, Netflix was offered for acquisition to Blockbuster for $50 million; however, Blockbuster declined the offer. Well, today Blockbuster must be feeling pretty bad about its decision.
It would not be an exaggeration to call Netflix the supreme leader of the world of online streaming services. You don’t have to take my word for it, just check out what Google Trends projects about my claim:
But one Steaming service is rapidly gaining popularity, and Netflix might just feel its wrath in the upcoming years; and that’s Kodi. Here’s a snapshot from Google Trends:
Kodi initially started off as an open source media player for XBox. The service was made popular by unofficial Addons which allow Kodi to become a streaming powerhouse. Kodi was awarded “Best Media Player” by Lifehacker in 2014, and at that time, it was still known as XBMC. As of today, Kodi has thousands of add-ons and plugins that enhance its usability and functions.
So now let’s see which one is better; Netflix or Kodi… I’ll be evaluating each service on various grounds, so let’s get started.
|What can you possibly watch?|
|Netflix has a limited library of movies and TV shows. But, some of the best movies/TV shows are exclusively available on Netflix, adding more to the streaming service’s demand. Netflix’s library updates every month with the addition and removal of new TV shows and movies.||Every TV show and movie that was made. Allows one to live stream TV channels, sports and international web content absolutely free of charge.|
|Is it easy to use?|
|It’s very easy to use. There are various categories you can choose to watch from or you can just search your desired movie/TV show.||If you are a tech savvy guy, then Kodi is the best option for you. You have to add the repository first. A non-technical guy will find it hard to operate Kodi in the beginning, but luckily there are a number of tutorials that can help users out.|
|The content on Netflix is licensed from various companies that hold the copyrights. Once the agreement expires, the content is taken down from Netflix.||Thousands of streaming sites and channels provide content that can be streamed on Kodi.|
|The content provided on Netflix is totally legal.||The content provided on Kodi is questionable in terms of legality. Many un-official Addons allow copyrighted content streaming which is illegal.|
|Netflix has different subscription prices for different regions. The basic subscription accounts for as low as $4.89 for Brazil to the highest of $11.89 for Switzerland. The pricing strategy of Netflix depends upon the region and the number of shows offered in that region.||Kodi is absolutely free of charge. The only thing you have to pay for is your Android or OpenELEC based device.|
Kodi Wins for the Following Categories:
- Number of titles available to watch
- Content sources from thousands of channels
- Price – Free!
Netflix Wins for the Following Categories:
- Easy to use
- Totally legal
- Exclusive titles available
So, it’s a draw!
As far as safety is concerned, Netflix is secure and enjoys complete monopoly within the online entertainment industry, but to unblock Geo-restricted content on Netflix always use a Netflix VPN. Kodi – on the other hand – is vulnerable to the extent of unofficial addons installed on it. Kodi warns its users not to use such add-ons that promote piracy and can potentially be exposed to hacking. For those who want to use Kodi for the right reasons need not worry about anything, but for those who want to stream or torrent copyrighted content, they will have to tackle down a DMCA notice!
