For the past two decades, online piracy has been the most debated topic in the world, and especially in the United States and in Canada. There are many anti-piracy organizations working relentlessly to safeguard the rights of copyright owners.
Thanks to the popularity of ongoing piracy movement that has emboldened copyright owners enough that they send millions of takedown requests to Google – the search engine giant.
Now, there is another organization, called ‘Contra Piracy’ that is slowly and steadily emerging as one of the front-runners of anti piracy campaign. The Swiss firm has gone at length to deal with the US and Canadian online pirates. The firm is known to charge hefty fines, (as high as $250) against illegal file sharers – especially those who tend to use BitTorrent – in lieu of the settlement claim.
Well, this is not the first time that a company has come up with a penalty. But important thing is that these fines are generated automatically against the so called online pirates.
Contra Piracy is not new for the torrent geeks. In fact the company has been operational for some time now. The company has got backing from several copyright owners and anti-piracy firms including Canipre and Logistep.
The Swiss company has issued notices to several films including, Anger Of The Dead and Turbo Kid. Contra Piracy is also using this type of settlement mechanism within the US gaming industry, thus becoming the first company to issue a similar notice to Metro Last Light.
Contra Piracy essentially uses DMCA-type notices and takedown requests in order to contact the subscribers through their respective internet service providers (ISPs).
Despite all the good efforts, there seems to be a time lapse that is well evident in the fact that there are some notices sent long after the actual date of infringement. Hence, there is a possibility that one may find a notice sent in January for the alleged infringement of a file in September last. Note the time lapse. It seems that the company is reluctant in investing to recapture its credibility.
Here is Contra Piracy Promo video.
One important thing to note is that this approach, Contra Piracy is able to continue its operations in the US without any legal bindings.
